Be Prepared Ride Smart and Ride Safe

Riding around Lake Balaton means changing terrain, weather, and daylight conditions. The right setup not only keeps you comfortable but ensures you enjoy every kilometre of the ride.

Here’s what we recommend packing to stay safe and ready for anything.

Recommended Gear

Helmet - Compulsory and must be worn at all times when riding
Gravel or mountain bike with tyres 45 mm or wider - We recommend the Kenda Crusher tyre, 20% discount for all entries when you buy two tyres.
2 L hydration pack or bottles
Bar and frame bags for snacks and essentials
Mini pump, CO₂ cartridges, inner tubes and repair plugs
Battery pack and charging cables
Chain link
Multi tool
Cargo bibs or shorts with storage
Padded gloves
Light rain jacket or windbreaker

Riding in the Dark

Night riding around Lake Balaton can be magical quiet roads, cool air, and stars over the water.

But it also requires the right lighting and visibility gear for your safety and compliance with local regulations.

COMPULSORY If you plan to ride through the night, make sure you have the following:

2 × front lights (at least 1000 lumens)
2 × rear lights
1 × reflective body band mandatory during hours of darkness

These ensure that you stay visible to other road users and enjoy a smooth, safe experience — even after sunset.

Weather

August is one of the hottest months around Lake Balaton. Expect temperatures between 25–32°C, with occasional heatwaves reaching 35°C.

Conditions are generally sunny, dry, and humid, making hydration and sun protection essential for long-distance gravel riding.

Afternoon thunderstorms can develop, though they are usually short-lived. Trails and gravel paths are typically dry and fast, but exposed sections can feel very warm due to strong sunlight.

Wind conditions vary, but the area can experience sudden gusts, especially near open lakeside routes.

Overall, August offers excellent riding conditions, provided you prepare for heat, sun, and potential late-day storms.
